DAVIS, Calif. - After posting a league-best 12-1 mark against fellow conference foes, UC Davis has earned the top seed in the upcoming 2007 Western Water Polo Women's Championship held at UC Santa Cruz, Friday, April 27 through Sunday, April 29.
The Aggies finished the regular season 23-6 overall and will look to defend the crown they won a year ago. Seeded second is Loyola Marymount, who finished with a WWPA-best 23-5 overall record, going 7-2 against WWPA foes. The top two seeds met up in the 2006 title game, with UC Davis picking off an 8-7 upset to earn its first trip to the NCAA Championships.
The Aggies currently rank No. 9 in the National Collegiate Top 20 of April 18, having climbed as high as No. 6 during the year. LMU is one spot ahead at No. 8, having jumped two places during the previous week. UC San Diego, seeded fourth in the conference tourney, is 15th nationally. Third-seeded Santa Clara holds a No. 17 national rank.
UC Davis will face the winner of eighth seed Sonoma State and ninth seed Colorado State at 5:30 on Friday evening. The Aggies defeated the Seawolves by a 21-3 final in the season's opening weekend. UC Davis hosted the Rams as a precursor to the Aggie Shootout tournament, claiming a 14-4 victory.
The winner of the WWPA Championships earns a berth in the National Collegiate (NCAA) Championships, hosted by Long Beach State at Los Alamitos Joint Forces Base on May 11-13.
