SAN JOSE, Calif. - UC Davis shut out San Jose State, 7-0, Friday afternoon in women's tennis action in San Jose. The Aggies swept the doubles matches before winning all six singles matches. The contest marked the end of the Aggies' dual match play for the spring. The victory gives UC Davis a final record of 11-11 while SJSU drops to 8-12 on the year.
In doubles, Robin Guier and Desiree Stone defeated Silvana Dukic and Dana Popescu, 8-0, at No. 2. In addition, Jenna Kappel and Herzyl Legaspi picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 1 over Amber Silverstone and Ashley Tavita. Anita Athavale and Emma Shapiro helped complete the sweep with a victory at No. 3.
The Aggies' success carried over in singles as Stone, Kappel and Andrea Phillips each posted victories in straight sets. Guier defeated Silverstone at No. 3 in three sets by taking the third set, 6-0. Shapiro was also victorious in three sets at No. 6 against Popescu. Legaspi and Courtney Koenigsfeld each split the first two sets before Legaspi prevailed in a super tiebreaker, 10-7.
"It was a great day for the Aggies," said UC Davis head coach Bill Maze. "It was our last match of the year and to win every individual match was a great feeling. Our goal coming into this season was to win 11 matches, and we did that."
The 11 wins is seven more than the Aggies had in 2006.
UC Davis concludes its season next week when it takes part in the Ojai Valley Tournament.
