SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Sophomore Jessica Hancock surrendered just two singles in a 2-0 shutout to help UC Davis salvage a split with UC Santa Barbara in the nightcap of a non-conference collegiate women's softball doubleheader at Campus Diamond Saturday. The host Gauchos won the opener, 9-1, in six innings.
The Aggies move to 25-15-1 overall. UCSB is now 22-15 for the year.
Hancock gave up singles in the first and fourth innings, while fanning seven against one walk to forge her third shutout of the year. She improves to 12-8 with the win.
Designated player Deanna Menapace and left fielder Sarah O'Neill each had RBI singles in the Aggie fourth to account for all of Game 2's scoring. Menapace and reigning D-I Independent Player of the Week Erin Emde each had two hits in the UC Davis victory.
In Saturday's opener, UCSB touched the Aggie pitching staff for 14 hits and scored two runs in each of the last three innings in the 9-1 victory. Emde had the only UC Davis run, launching a solo homer to center in the sixth inning.
A total of six Gauchos had two hits apiece in the offensive onslaught. Tiffany Wright, Christine Ramos, Ericka Hansen and Nicole Churnock also doubled to lead UCSB.
The Aggies complete their three-game series with UCSB at noon Sunday.
