UC Davis Splits Tuesday Doubleheader With Sacramento State

April 10, 2007

UC Davis 2, Sacramento State 0 (Game 1)
Sacramento 5, UC Davis 4 (Game 2)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - UC Davis split a doubleheader with Sacramento State Tuesday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The Aggies won the first game, 2-0, behind a five-hit shutout by Lindsay Tognetti. Trish Paine drove in both runs with a single in the fifth. The Hornets came back to win the second game, 5-4, to snap the Aggies' four-game winning streak. The split gives UC Davis a 24-14-1 record on the year.

With the first game scoreless and the Aggies being held to two hits, UC Davis broke through in the fifth inning. Sarah O'Neill led off with a walk. With one out, Erin Emde walked before a wild pitch put runners at second and third with one out. After a pop-up, Pained singled to left field to drive in the only two runs of the game to make it 2-0.

The Aggies threatened again in the sixth as Deanna Menapace doubled with one out. Nikki Sheldon followed with a fly ball double to center, and Menapace was thrown out at the plate.

Tognetti was dominant against the Hornets from start to finish, striking out 10 and walking only one in posting her second shutout in as many starts. She struck out at least one batter in each inning.

The senior retired the first seven Hornets she faced. In the fourth, she allowed a two-out double but struck out Amy Jo McKenzie to end the inning. A lead-off single in the fifth was wiped out by a double-play, preserving the Aggies 2-0 lead.

With a runner at third with two outs in the sixth, Tognetti used another strikeout to get out of the inning. In the seventh, the Hornets put runners at first and second with two outs before the right-hander struck out Melissa Cross to end the game.

Tognetti improved to 12-4 on the year and posted her second consecutive shutout and third, overall.

The Hornets opened the scoring in the second game with an unearned run in the second. With the bases loaded and two outs, Amy Tompkins had an infield single to drive in a run and make it 1-0.

UC Davis came back with an unearned run of their own in the third. With two outs, Julie Stauder walked. Mandi Salcido then reached on an error, allowing Stauder to score on the play.

In the third, Sacramento State (10-26), used a groundout and an infield single to drive in two more unearned runs and led 3-1 at that point.

The Hornets loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth and, with two outs, scored a pair of runs on a single by Hilary Johnson.

The Aggies rallied in the seventh with three runs. Ashley Johnson led off the inning with her second home run of the season, closing the gap to 5-2. An infield single and a pair of fielding errors allowed the Aggies to load the bases with one out. Salcido then doubled to right to drive in two more urns and make it 5-4. That's as close as UC Davis would get as as a strikeout and groundout ended the game.

UC Davis returns to action this weekend when it faces UC Santa Barbara on the road.
