IRVINE, Calif. - Aggie freshmen Desiree Stone and Herzyl Legaspi claimed straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, but 41st-ranked UC Irvine protected its home court in a 5-2 win over UC Davis in non-conference women's tennis dual action at Anteater Tennis Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies move to 7-7 overall. The Anteaters, coming off a Big West Conference upset over Long Beach State, improve to 12-2 for the season.
Stone took down UCI's Inna Agababian, 6-4, 6-4, for the No. 1 singles match. Legaspi swept sophomore Heidi Kaloi by a 6-4, 7-5 score in the No. 3 position. However, the Anteaters claimed the remaining four singles matches in straight sets after sweeping the three doubles matches.
Aggie head coach Bill Maze praised his team for its three-match road trip against future Big West leaguemates. "I thought to win at No. 1 and No. 3 is very impressive for us," he said. "We've struggled against Irvine in the past. They beat Long Beach so they're the best team in the conference right now."
"I'm very pleased with the effort against Irvine and I feel like we had a successful road trip. The team feels good about the performances."
UC Davis returns home to start a three-match homestand at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies host Concordia on Friday then former California Collegiate Athletic Association leaguemate UC San Diego on Saturday.
