DAVIS, Calif. - In a tightly contested match, UC Davis held on to defeat visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in men's tennis action at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. Michael Reiser provided the clinching victory for the Aggies at No. 3 singles to break a 3-3 tie. Justin Garcia and Kevin Liang also had wins in singles. The Aggies have now won two straight and improved to 5-10 overall. CMS, which entered the day ranked No. 4 in Division III, fell to 17-5.
The Aggies started the match by winning the doubles point. Chin and Garcia teamed at No. 1 to defeat Guillaume Schils and Lawrence Wang, 8-5. It was the duo's eighth win in nine matches. The next battle to finish went to the Stags as Jack DePaolo and Mikey Lim outlasted Henri Landes and Casey McMakin, 8-6. The decisive match came down to No. 2 where Daniel Elefant and Jayce Fitch posted a 9-7 win over William Ellison and David Oehm to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
In singles, CMS tied the score at 1-1 when Wang defeated Chin, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1. Liang followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over DePaolo at No. 6 to make it 2-1. The Aggies incresed their advantage to 3-1 when Garcia completed a 7-5, 6-4 win over Eric Chow. Garcia has now won six of his last seven matches and leads the Aggies with 14 wins, overall.
The Stags won the next two matches to finish as Ben Hough and Ellison won at No. 5 and No. 2, respectively. That tied it a 3-3 pending the outcome of the No. 3 match between Resier and Lim.
Reiser had dropped the first set 7-5 but came back to win the second set 6-4. In the third set, he defeated Lim 6-3 to clinch the victory for the Aggies. The win was Resier's 12th, overall, and also marked the fourth straight time he has won a match going the full three sets.
UC Davis is next in action April 6 when it hosts Cal Poly at 2 p.m.
