Senior utility Katie Hicks scored two fourth-quarter goals as 10th-ranked Loyola Marymount pulled away to a 7-5 victory over seventh-ranked UC Davis in a showdown of Western Water Polo Association women's archrivals at the Burns Recreation & Aquatics Center Saturday.
The Aggies end their winning streak at seven straight, falling to 16-5 overall. This is also the team's first loss against WWPA opposition this season. The Lions increase their run to seven consecutive wins, improving to 16-4 for the year.
Junior Mary Lowe scored two goals to lead UC Davis for the second straight game. Hicks and fellow veteran Stacia Peterson each had two to pace LMU. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaylee Caster had 12 saves for the Lions, while counterpart Amber Korner posted eight in front of the Aggie net.
UC Davis outshot LMU by a 29-24 margin, but was just 1-for-5 on 6-on-5 chances.
Other than Lowe's 6-on-5 goal that broke the scoreless game with 2:24 in the first period, LMU never trailed in the contest. Senior center Sarah Hamilton tied the game at 1-1 just a minute later, then Peterson and Cara Colton each scored in advantage situations during the second period to give the Lions a 3-1 lead at halftime.
Raycraft ended UC Davis' scoring drought with a goal on the opening possession of the first half, cutting the margin to 3-2. Peterson again nudged the lead back to tw goals with her strike later in the period. The Aggies then scored back-to-back early in the fourth quarter, picking up goals by Lowe and junior Laura Uribe to tie the contest at 4-4 with 5:15 remaining.
Hicks scored the game-winning goal on the next possession to put LMU back up by a 5-4 edge, then sophomore driver Nicole Hughes found the back of the net with three minutes remaining to take a two-goal lead. Hicks later tacked on another at the 1:52 mark to effectively seal the win.
