No. 7 Aggies Roll To 14-7 Win Over Hoosiers

March 11, 2007

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior attacker Christi Raycraft scored a game-high four goals, including three straight in the third period, to lead No. 7 UC Davis to a 14-7 win over No. 20 Indiana in a non-conference collegiate women's water polo match at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday.

The Aggies, winners of six straight, improve to 15-4 for the season. The Hoosiers fall to 5-9 overall.

Junior Mary Lowe added three goals for UC Davis, while centers Laura Uribe and Katherine O'Rourke each scored two. Senior Amber Korner posted seven saves in her three quarters in net for the Aggies. Junior attacker Brooke Zimmerman and senior center Melissa Soria each had two goals to lead Indiana.

After Lowe scored her first of two 6-on-5 goals in the opening minutes, Raycraft helped UC Davis extend its early lead when her steal led to a O'Rourke's two-meter goal. She then drew a five-meter exclusion and converted her own penalty shot to push the lead up to 3-0. Zimmerman assisted Soria on a goal on the next possession to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Aggies tacked on two more advantage goals to move ahead by 5-1.

Zimmerman's blast from seven meters and a 6-on-5 rebound and putback by Jaclyn Tameris closed the gap to 5-3 at the end of the first period. However, the Hoosiers never approached any closer in the game. Uribe's opened the second quarter with a successful outside shot, igniting a 9-1 Aggie run that lasted through the third period. UC Davis led 8-3 at the half and held a 14-4 advantage through 24 minutes of play. Raycraft scored three straight goals in that 6-1 third frame, including a steal-and-counter with 3:04 remaining.

Indiana scored three goals in the fourth quarter to cut into the Aggie lead. Zimmerman hit a short lob at the 7:14 mark, then assisted Estrada a minute later. Kristin Zernicke then finished her counterattack at the 5:15 mark to bring the score to its final tally of 14-7.

The victory completes a strong individual weekend for Raycraft. The Davis Senior High alumna scored four goals and a pair of steals in Saturday's 12-7 win over 17th-ranked Santa Clara.

Sunday's game is UC Davis' last before heading into final examinations. The Aggies will return to action on March 23 for a home game against Maryland.
