IRVINE, Calif. - Katherine O'Rourke scored four goals while Christi Raycraft, Sofia Patronas and Laura Uribe each added one as 10th-ranked UC Davis upset seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount in the first round of the UC Irvine Invitational women's water polo tournament Saturday.
The Aggies later lost to No. 3 Southern California, 15-2, in Saturday's 13th game. Juniors Casie Mota and Jessica Soza each scored in the loss, while senior Amber Korner recorded eight saves in net.
UC Davis moves to 9-3 overall, including 5-0 against members of the Western Water Polo Association.
In Saturday's opener, UC Davis opened for a 4-1 advantage and lled 5-3 at the halftime break before the Lions stormed back with a three-goal third -- getting two goals by veteran Stacia Peterson -- to tie the game at 6-6. Uribe tacked on a 6-on-5 goal with midway in the fourth period while the Aggies held LMU scoreless for eight minutes, sealing the win.
This is the second straight time UC Davis has upset LMU by a single goal. The previous occasion was in last year's WWPA title game, in a win that vaulted the Aggies to their first NCAA Championships berth.
UC Davis will face the loser of the Stanford-San Jose State game in Sunday's 9:15 contest.
