DAVIS, Calif. - Aggie senior Michael Chin teamed up with Justin Garcia for a win at No. 1 doubles and captured a comeback win at No. 2 doubles, but UC Santa Barbara claimed four of the six singles matchups in a 5-2 win over UC Davis in non-conference men's collegiate tennis action at the Marya Welch Tennis Center Sunday.
The Aggies remain winless at 0-8 during the spring. The Gauchos improve to 2-5 overall.
After UCSB claimed an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles, Chin and Garcia beat the Gauchos' top doubles tandem of Anders Dalskov and Grant Robertson in an 8-4 pro set. However, UCSB's Nigel Barton/Josh Finkelstein team bested Jayce Fitch and Daniel Elefant by an 8-6 score to claim the doubles team point.
Sophomore Mike Reiser drew first blood in the singles, defeating Robertson in 6-2, 6-2 straight sets at the No. 5 slot. Chin had the only other Aggie singles win at No. 2. He dropped a first-set tiebreaker to Dalskov then came back to win consecutive 6-3 sets for the victory. Garcia battled with Barton at No. 6 in another of four total split-set matches, taking a 6-3 second set before losing, 7-5, in the third.
Sunday's match was the Aggie men's opener at the Marya Welch Tennis Center, the first of 11 home matches on the 2007 slate. UC Davis returns to action on February 24 for a home dual with Nevada. First serve is at 1 p.m.
