LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior attacker Christi Raycraft scored a total of six goals to lead UC Davis to a pair of first-day wins at UC San Diego's Triton Invitational women's water polo tournament Saturday. The Aggies beat Redlands by a 15-4 final in their opener, then defeated 13th-ranked Michigan in a 13-6 in Saturday's nightcap.
UC Davis, tied for ninth in this week's national collegiate coaches' poll, remains undefeated at 8-0 for the season. This is the best season start for the program since achieving varsity status in 1997.
"I thought we were great in three areas," said head coach Jamey Wright. "Our shooting was outstanding, even better than I thought. Our defense was solid and our fitness level was high. It's one thing to counter a team like UC Santa Cruz, but to counterattack Michigan is impressive. They are a really fast team. Right now, we're playing very well."
Senior center Katherine O'Rourke led UC Davis with three goals in the Michigan victory, while Raycraft, Mary Lowe and Laura Uribe each added two more. Senior goalie Amber Korner posted a career-high 15 saves in defense of the Aggie cage.
Raycraft scored four goals -- all in the first half -- in the morning win over the Bulldogs. Sophomore Lindsay Kiyama added three second-half goals, including two in a 7-0 Aggie run. Korner had five saves against two goals in three quarters of play, while adding three assists.
The Aggies will take on sixth-ranked San Diego State in the tournament semifinal on Sunday morning at 11:45 a.m. Loyola Marymount and UC Irvine, also top seeds in their respective brackets, will square off in the opposite semifinal game.
