STOCKTON, Calif. - UC Davis completed a strong Saturday at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton. The Aggies won four of their six singles matches and went 3-1 in doubles. As a result of the succes, there will be an all-Aggie final Sunday in Flight C as Kevin Liang and Shaun Garcia both won twice on Saturday.
Liang began his day in the quarterfinals with a dramatic come-from-behind victory against Saint Mary's Jerry Ellison. The Gael won the first set, 6-4, before Liang mounted his rally. The pair went to a second-set tiebreaker which Liang won 7-0. The Aggie then went on to win the third set, 6-4. Liang needed another three sets to get past San Francisco's Torin Ching in the semifinal. He finally won by a score of 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Garcia had an easier time with his opponents. In the quarterfinals, he cruised past Nevada's Tony Bulich, 6-4, 6-0. Garcia then disposed of USF's Mitch Del Rosario, 6-3, 6-4, setting up Sunday's final with Liang.
In doubles, Liang teamed with Henri Landes to win their match in Flight B. Daniel Elefant and Max Elins picked up an 8-6 victory over Sonoma State's Jeremy Heckley and Quan Vu. Tyler Lee and Hunter Lee were also victorious in doubles.
The three-day tournament, which began Friday, concludes Sunday.
