Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Samantha Faber scored two goals, and UC Davis picked up its first Big West Conference victory in a 2-1 win over visiting Cal State Northridge Friday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Stadium. All of the scoring came in the first half as UC Davis used an active defense to hang on for the one-goal victory. The win improved UC Davis to 5-5-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in Big West play. The Matadors fell to 2-7-1 and dropped their Big West opener.

Faber started the scoring in the 24th minute when she blasted a shot from about 35 yards out into the back of the net to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.

In the 39th minute, Faber added her second goal and third of the season. The play developed when Lauren Huntley lofted a pass from the right wing to just in front of the goal. Faber raced toward the goal on the left side and redirected it into the net to make it 2-0.

Facing a two-goal deficit heading into the half, the Matadors were able to cut the margin in half on a corner kick in the 43rd minute. Susie Mischenko scored on a header from a kick by Sydney Vermillion from the right corner, pulling Cal State Northridge within 2-1.

In the second half, six of the nine shots fired by the Matadors were on goal. However, all of them were stopped by Aggie keeper Sarah Peters. The freshman ended up with seven saves on the day and improved to 3-2-0 on the year.

"Samantha had two great goals today, and that just changes the game," said UC Davis head coach MaryClaire Robinson. "It gives you the opportunity to get in behind and go forward and stay calm. The onus is on them to score. It got a little heated, and it got a little scary. Our team defense did well."

In all, Cal State Northridge held a 14-10 advantage in shots while taking seven corner kicks against the Aggies' one.

Faber finished with four shots while Jordan Martin had two. Gabina Bohlman also fired two shots with Megan Wall and Courtney Brown each finishing with one. Huntley assist was her second of the season.

UC Davis continues its homestand and Big West action Sunday when it hosts Long Beach State at noon.
