FRESNO, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team began its fall season Friday at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic in Fresno. The Aggies' Nick Lopez posted wins in both doubles and singles. Justin Garcia paired with Lopez for a doubles win while Daniel Elefant was also victorious in singles. UC Davis is one of 13 schools taking part in the three-day event. A total of six Aggies are participating in the tournament, which includes three singles and two doubles flights.
The start of Friday's action was delayed due to rain. When play did begin, doubles action was the focus. The Aggies are fielding two such tandems, and it was senior Justin Garcia and freshman Nick Lopez who started off the day with an 8-5 victory over Fresno Pacific's Maxime Adam and Victor Melina in the Flight 2 round of 16. The duo was defeated in the quarterfinals when Cal's Zach Gilbert and Ken Nakahara posted an 8-4 win.
Also in the same flight, Henri Landes and Matt Jagiello were defeated in the round of 16 by Sacramento State's Holden Ching and Timothy Lantin, 8-3.
In singles, Michael Reiser and Garcia both suffered defeats in the Flight 2 round of 32. Reiser was upended by Ching, 6-1, 6-4, and Garcia lost to Santa Clara's Blaine Shields, 6-1, 6-3.
In Flight 3 singles, Lopez defeated UC Santa Barbara's Taylor Goggin in the round of 32. Daniel Elefant was also victorious in that round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Fresno City College's Hank Bessinger. Cal Poly's Rob Foy posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Matt Jagiello.
In Flight 3 singles round of 16 action, Sven-David Rueff of Sacramento State defeated Lopez, 6-1, 6-1, and Cal's Nicolai Horgen was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Elefant.
The tournament continues Saturday before concluding on Sunday.
