BERKELEY, Calif. - Nick Lopez played a total of six sets Sunday in his run to the Flight C singles final at the Chandler Cup in Berkeley. The UC Davis freshman won his semifinal match in three sets before falling in three sets in the final. Both of his matches hit the two-hour mark. Lopez was the only Aggie in action on the tournament's third and final day.
In his semifinal match against Cal's Geoff Chizever, Lopez won the first set 7-5 before falling in a second set tiebreaker. Lopez would go on to win the third set, 6-3, as the marathon match lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes.
The victory set up a title match with Cal Poly's Alex Sonesson, who defeated Washington's Skyler Tateishi in the other semifinal match. Against Lopez, Sonesson won the first set, 7-5, before Lopez battled back to take the second set, 6-2. Sonesson posted a 6-3 victory in the third set to win the two-hour match.
Lopez finished the weekend with a 4-1 record, upping his overall fall mark to 5-2 in singles.
UC Davis will next take part in the Pacific Invitational next weekend in Stockton. It will be the fourth and final tournament of the fall for the Aggies.
