Singh Digs 36 Against Big West Front-Runner

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Despite a season-high 36 digs by sophomore libero Avreeta Singh, UC Davis was unable to continue its momentum after a Game 2 win, losing in four games to 24th-ranked Cal Poly in a Big West Conference women's volleyball match at Mott Gymnasium Saturday in front of 717. The game scores were 30-15, 28-30, 30-20, 30-15 in favor of the hosts.

The Aggies drop to 3-20 for the year and remain winless at 0-11 in conference play. The Mustangs improve to 16-7 overall and protect first place in the Big West standings at 10-1.

Singh's total of 36 digs surpasses by seven her previous 2007 best and represents her highest total since tallying 40 in a four-game match at Cal State Fullerton midway through her freshman season. She holds the UC Davis single-match record of 42, set at Fresno State on September 16, 2006. Freshman outside hitter Kayla Varney led the Aggies offensively with 16 kills while adding 23 digs of her won.

Four-time Big West Player of the Week Kylie Atherstone had 16 kills and hit .382 for Cal Poly, while freshman Dominique Olowolafe and junior Ali Waller each added 10 kills. Outside hitter Gaby Rivera chipped in eight kills and had four of her team's eight service aces.

Varney registered six kills and nine digs while Singh had 13 in the Aggies' 30-28 win in Game 2. UC Davis had fallen behind by a 16-11 margin after Rivera served up a pair of aces to highlight a 7-0 Mustang run. Cal Poly suffered from 11 hitting errors, including three straight that put the Aggies up by a 25-23 edge. Varney had two kills down the final stretch, then setter Carson Lowden served up an ace for the game-winner.

The Mustangs found their stride midway in Game 3 as Atherstone pounded out three straight kills in a 5-0 run that broke a 9-9 tie to a 13-9 Cal Poly advantage. Senior setter Chelsea Hayes later posted two blocks in the Mustangs' 4-0 finish. Cal Poly dominated the fourth and final game as sophomore Caitlin Suttich served up the majority of her team's 12-1 stretch.

Overall, the Mustangs hit .178 to the Aggies' .031, while holding substantial edges in blocks (12.5 to 2.0) and aces (8 to 2). UC Davis did outdig its host, picking up 96 gets overall to Cal Poly's 91.

UC Davis returns home to host UC Irvine and UC Riverside on November 2 and 3, respectively.
