BERKELEY, Calif. - UC Davis began play in its third tournament of the fall, Friday, at the Chandler Cup in Berkeley. Four Aggies picked up wins in the opening rounds of their flights. A total of seven Aggies are taking part in the three-day event, including six singles and three doubles entries.
In Flight B singles, senior Justin Garcia was a 7-6, 6-2 winner over UC Santa Cruz's Max Ortiz to advance to the round of 16. The three Aggies taking part in Flight C all won their round of 32 matches. Freshman Nick Lopez defeated Loyola Marymount's Dmitry Popov, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Tyler Lee posted a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Mark Vartabedian of UC Santa Cruz. Also in Flight C, sophomore Nic Amaroli defeated LMU's Nick Von Der Ahe, 6-1, 6-4.
In the Flight C round of 16, Lopez advanced with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 victory over Nevada's Guerin Smith.
Two Aggies' doubles teams fell in the Flight B doubles round of 16. The third UC Davis duo opens play in Flight C on Saturday.
The action continues Sunday with the completion of opening round doubles matches as well as singles main draw quarterfinal matches. Saturday's action will also include the beginning of the consolation draw.
