LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior driver Nick Arrigo scored the game-winning goal with one second remaining in the final quarter to lift No. 10 UC Davis to a 9-8 upset over No. 6 Long Beach State in a non-conference men's collegiate water polo game at the Campus Pool Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 17-5 for the season. They have won 14 of their past 15 games, with the lone setback coming against the defending NCAA champions. The 49ers, who had upset second-ranked Stanford earlier in the day, move to 14-8 for the year.
Junior Grant Muenter led UC Davis offensively with three goals while senior Jesse Tweed added two. Juniors Paul Wilson and Adam Lindsay and freshman Walter Eggert also scored for the Aggies. Senior goalie Mike McGee posted 10 saves in net.
In a game that featured seven ties, the Aggies held the largest lead of the game when Tweed coverted a man-up opportunity at 5:03 in the third period, putting his team up by a 5-3 margin. The Beach quickly erased the deficit, as Pavle Filiopovic answered with a goal on the next possession then Nick Korsgaden retied the score at 5-5 with 3:50 remaining.
UC Davis later took short-lived leads with goals by Grant Muenter at the end of the third and Lindsay early in the fourth period, but LBSU answered each to force a 7-7 tie with three minutes left. Muenter's hat trick put the Aggies up by one with 1:22 left in the game but the 49ers again had a response. Senior attacker Clint Wilson scored the equalizer with just nine ticks left before a possible overtime.
In its last possession, UC Davis scored in the final seconds as Arrigo's shot deflected off an LBSU defender then skipped past goalie Derek Weibe-Bailey for the win.
This is the second time in three days that Arrigo has scored a game-winner late in a contest. He had scored both the equalizer and go-ahead in the Aggies' 9-8 overtime win over UC San Diego on Friday.
UC Davis returns home to host Pepperdine on Friday, October 26.
