SAN JOSE, Calif. - UC Davis defeated San Jose State, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action at Spartan Field in San Jose. Rochelle VanBuskirk scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the 79th minute as UC Davis posted its third shutout of the season. The win improves the Aggies to 6-8-0 while the Spartans dropped to 3-10-2.
For the second straight match, UC Davis found itself playing in a scoreless tie on the road deep into the second half. With less than 12 minutes remaining in regulation, Marisa Boge set up the Aggie score with a cross from the right side. VanBuskirk was there to tap in her fourth goal of the season and put the Aggies up 1-0. The assist was the second on the year for Boge.
The contest was tightly contested throughout. Both teams fired eight shots in the first half with UC Davis edging San Jose State overall, 17-16. The Aggies took seven corner kicks compared to the Spartans' six.
Sarah Peters was helped by yet another strong defensive performance for the Aggies. The goalkeeper posted her third shutout and saved all three shots on goal. She upped her season record to 4-5-0.
VanBuskirk, Megan Wall and Jordan Martin each finished with three shots. Dayna Dumont, Samantha Faber and Gabina Bohlman had two shots apiece while Lauren Huntley and Boge each posted one.
UC Davis returns to action Sunday when it hosts UC Irvine in a Big West Conference battle at Aggie Soccer Stadium. The match begins at noon.
