RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside scored with less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime to get past visiting UC Davis, 2-1, Sunday in women's soccer action in Riverside. Tessa Lennala scored the game-winner after both teams had scored in a dramatic final five minutes of regulation. The loss drops UC Davis to 5-8-0 and 1-3-0 in the Big West. UC Riverside improves to 8-5-1 and 2-1-1 in the conference.
It appeared the two teams would be headed to overtime in a scoreless deadlock. That changed with five minutes remaining in the second half as Samantha Faber scored her fourth goal of the season when she connected from just inside 18 yards to put UC Davis on top 1-0.
The score remained that way into the 89th minute before Jill Del Rosario scored on a header with just under two minutes remaining in regulation to tie the match at 1-1. Letty Villalpando assisted on the goal.
Neither team was able to score in the first overtime as the Highlanders outshot the Aggies, 2-0, in the 10-minute period. UCR held a 3-1 advantage in shots in the second overtime, including the final game-winner by Lennala.
"It was the best game we've played so far," said UC Davis head coach MaryClaire Robinson. "We battled. We were dangerous and created good chances to score. We were a little unlucky in the back, and we need to do a better job of closing out games."
UC Riverside outshot UC Davis, 15-13. Faber led the Aggies with four shots. Dayna Dumont finished with three, and Megan Wall and Jordan Martin each had two shots.
In goal, Sarah Peters posted four saves in over 107 minutes of action. UCR keeper Deanna Borgelt finished with three saves.
UC Davis returns to action Wednesday in a non-conference match at San Jose State. The Aggies will then face UC Irvine next Sunday at Aggie Soccer Stadium.
