SAN JOSE, Calif. - The UC Davis men's swimming and diving team defeated UC Santa Cruz 165-120 while the women swept host San Jose State (166-132) and UC Santa Cruz (251-46) on the opening day of the 2007-08 season at The Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.
The men's team captured top times 15 of the 16 events while the women's squad won nine events en route to dominate victories in their season-opening double dual. The men swam exhibition in the final five events.
In her first collegiate event, freshman Tyler Ring captured victories in both distance events with a time of 10:37.60 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 5:09.71 in the 500 free. Her time in the 1,000 free puts her on the Aggies' all-time list.
Sophomore Heidi Kucera was also a two-event winner for the women as she claimed the top spots in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.88) and 200 individual medley (2:09.37). Both times make the all-time list.
The men had four student-athletes win multiple events in senior Russell Taylor, sophomores Russ Underwood and Daniel Donnelly, and freshman Paul Navo. Taylor was the top Aggie as he won three events. He claimed both breast events with times of 58.43 in the 100 and 2:10.19 in an exhibition swim in the 200 and 1:57.10 in the 200 IM. He also swam the second leg on the winning 200 medley free relay team (1:37.74).
Underwood had the top times in the 100 (47.10) and 200 free (1:45.54) while Donnelly claimed the 100 butterfly (51.89) and the 100 backstroke (52.50).
Navo earned victories on both 1-meter and 3-meter boards in the first event of his collegiate career with scores of 216.40 and 236.75, respectively.
A total of 16 different Aggies claimed victories on the day, which included six newcomers, which included Matt Herman in the 1,000 free, Linda Hermann in the 200 free, Mary Struempf in the 100 fly, Jamie Flynn on the high board and Jimmy Fong in the 200 back.
Hermann's times of 1:54.12 in the 200 free and 2:09.79 in the 200 back place her on the all-time list as does Struempf's time in the 200 fly (2:08.37) and Herman's time of 9:56.33 in the 1,000 free.
Other Aggie victories went to Ashley Cayford in the 100 breast (1:05.72), Toki Burke in the 200 fly (1:59.64), Evan Kraus in the 50 free (21.43), Krysta Chaldekas on the low board (239.50) and Alex Arbios in the 500 free (4:46.11).
The Aggies return to action next weekend at the Pacific Invitational, which runs from Friday to Saturday.
