DAVIS, Calif. - Three Aggies scored hat tricks as UC Davis scored 19 unanswered goals in a 21-3 win over Sonoma State in the first of three Western Water Polo Association women's water polo matches at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday. Senior Cassie Schaefer and freshmen Dana Nelsen and Heidi Kucera each scored three goals for the Aggies in the win.
The Seawolves actually held a brief lead early in the game when Roxanna McEwen's goal from the three position put her team up by a 3-2 margin. However, Schaefer tied the game on the next possession on a bar-in shot, then completed her hat trick on an unassisted score with 1:26 left in the first quarter.
The Aggies held a 6-3 edge through the first period, then extended the lead to 11-3 at the half. Kucera, Nelsen and junior Ashley Greenwood each recorded a pair of goals in UC Davis' 7-0 third period.
McEwen finished with two of Sonoma's three goals. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Brownrigg was a highlight for the Seawolves, posting eight of her 10 saves before the halftime break. Coincidentally, Brownrigg's older sister, Meggan, was a goalie for UC Davis four years ago.
Sonoma State will continue Sunday's tripleheader with a game against Cal State East Bay, then the Pioneers square off against UC Davis at 4 p.m.
