UC Davis Defeats San Jose State In Overtime

Sept. 6, 2006

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis defeated visiting San Jose State, 3-2 in overtime, Wednesday afternoon in women's soccer action at Aggie Soccer Stadium. An own goal less than four minutes into the first overtime period was the difference as the Aggies won their home opener and improved to 2-1-0 on the year. Heather Finlayson and Julia Gamlen each scored their first goals of the season for UC Davis.

The Aggies wasted little time getting on the board as Finlayson connected in the 3rd minute on a corner kick from Gamlen. That gave UC Davis a 1-0 lead just 2;39 into the contest.

In the 18th minute, Gamlen blasted a shot from 20 yards out into the left side of the net to put UC Davis up 2-0.

"We had a nice little corner. It wasn't super-pretty, but we buried it," said UC Davis head coach MaryClaire Robinson. "Julia's goal was just personal brilliance. She had a chance and just swung inside net, and that's what our midfield can do. It would have been nice to get a few early in the second half, but we finished it and that's all that really matters."

The Aggies would take the 2-0 lead into the 61st minute before San Jose State (0-3-1) began its comeback. Lauren Moniz scored on an assist from Cristin Murphy to draw the Spartans within 2-1. The game was tied with 7:37 left in regulation on a goal by Jennifer Guadagnola.

In overtime, the fateful score was initiated when UC Davis' Katie Snyder launched a free kick from just inside midfield down the middle toward the goal. A SJSU defender sent a header into the net, giving the Aggies the 3-2 victory.

"That was a good win," said Robinson. "We jumped on them early, and they clawed back. We had some flat spots, and they took advantage of them. What it comes down to at this level is whether you finish chances, and we had two great ones in the beginning that gave us some wiggle room."

For the game, UC Davis outshot San Jose State, 13-10. Megan Daws finished with three saves for the Aggies while Kelsea Scott had two saves for the Spartans.

UC Davis is next in action Sunday when it hosts Idaho State. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
