DAVIS, Calif. - Cal Poly scored one goal in the first half and two more in the second half on its way to a 3-0 victory over host UC Davis Friday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Stadium. The win improved the Mustangs to 6-4-0 on the year while the Aggies suffered their first loss in nearly four weeks and dropped to 7-2-0.
Cal Poly started its scoring in the 14th minute when Morgan Miller tapped in a shot in front of the right side of the goal to make it 1-0. Eric Zumbahlen assisted on the play with a pass from between the right corner and the goal.
It remained a one-goal game for the next 52 minutes before Kaleena Andruss tucked in an unassisted goal from about 15 yards out on the left side in the 67th minute to give Cal Poly a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs added an insurance goal less than 14 minutes later when Ashley Vallis knocked in a shot in front of the goal on assists from Danielle Camarena and Kelsey Carroll.
"We didn't take care of the ball when we needed to. We had some chances in the first half that we squandered a bit. We had a shot, but it wasn't a very good one," said UC Davis head coach MaryClaire Robinson.
"We did some good things today. We were able to get in behind a little bit. The stats aren't horrible. We'll be fine. We have a young group, and we'll bounce back."
The Mustangs outshot the Aggies 8-7. Lacey Cobb posted three shots for UC Davis, and Annie McAllister had two. Meggie O'Hagan led Cal Poly with three shots.
The loss snapped UC Davis' six-match winning streak, which included three straight shutouts. The Aggies' only defeat entering the contest was a 2-1 setback at Sacramento State on Sept. 3. It also marked the first time this year an opponent has shut out UC Davis.
UC Davis will look to start another winning streak Sunday afternoon when it hosts UC Santa Barbara at noon at Aggie Soccer Stadium.
