Sept. 2, 2006

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Valparaiso scored three goals in the first 25 minutes of play and held off a furious UC Davis attack in defeating the Aggies, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in men's soccer action at Aggie Soccer Stadium. The Crusaders made the most of limited scoring opportunities as UC Davis fired 33 shots compared to the visitors' six. The first four goals of the game were scored in the first 24:14 of the contest. D.J. Catrow scored two goals for Valparaiso, which improved to 3-0-0 on the year. Nicholas Lind and Paul Cain scored their first goals of the season for UC Davis (2-2-0).

Catrow started things off for the Crusaders in the 8th minute on an assist from Jeremy Stacy. Catrow made it 2-0 in the 17th minute on an unassisted goal via a loose ball in front of the goal.

Lind put UC Davis on the board just over two minutes later when he fired in a shot off a rebound from a Juan Hernandez shot to draw the Aggies within 2-1.

Valparaiso made it 3-1 in the 25th minute when J.J. Eschenburg scored on an assist from Andrew Stewart.

"We dug ourselves a hole and couldn't get out of it," said UC Davis head coach Dwayne Shaffer. "It's disappointing when we're a veteran team, playing at home, and we give a visiting team life."

The score remained 3-1 into the 81st minute before Paul Cain connected on a header in front of the net. Mariano Arrua and Dan Campbell assisted on the play, which pulled UC Davis within 3-2 with 9:36 left.

"I thought we played outstanding in the second half," added Shaffer. "We played hard and with a lot of heart."

The Crusaders had all six of their shots in the first half as Catrow had half of that total.

Quincy Amarikwa finished with eight shots for the Aggies, and Cain posted five.

UC Davis next travels to Corvallis, Ore., to take part in the OSU Hensor/Zaher Memorial Tournament. The Aggies face host Oregon State on Sept. 8 before concluding the tournament the following day against Xavier.
