RENO, Nevada - Junior midfielder Megan Wall was the only player on either team to score a goal in her opponent's net as UC Davis defeated Boise State, 2-1, in a non-conference women's collegiate soccer match at the University of Nevada Friday. Each team posted scores on own-goal situations, including the game-winner in the 81st minute.
The Aggies improve to 4-1 for the season, winning their third straight game. The Broncos drop to 3-4 overall.
UC Davis took five shots in the scoreless first half, then managed a sixth when BSU keeper Kim Parker recorded a save against Annie McAllister. The Broncos took a 1-0 lead when UC Davis accidentally sent a ball into its own net during the 54th minute.
Aggie goalkeeper Megan Daws minded her net during the next five minutes of play, stopping shots by Erin Wofford and Randi Baker before Wall tied the game on an unassisted goal in the 65th minute. Parker had misjudged a UC Davis ball, allowing Wall to tap it in for an easy score.
Senior forward Kristin Hall and freshman midfielder Kaylea Perenon each managed shot attempts for Boise State to regain the lead, but both players missed wide of their targets. UC Davis midfielder Magdalena Guzinski also fired a shot in the 78th minute, but Parker gloved it for her fourth save of the game. Finally, in the 81st minute, Boise State put a ball into its own lead to provide the Aggies with a 2-1 edge.
Sophomore defender Brianna Tsui nearly extended the Aggie lead to two goals, sending a shot off the BSU crossbar in the 86th minute. UC Davis outshot its opponent for the fifth time in as many contests this season, holding a 10-7 margin in attempts. This is the second time in three games UC Davis has won on an own-goal scoring play, having defeated San Jose State in such fashion on September 6.
