DAVIS, Calif. - Quincy Amarikwa scored the game's lone goal in the 75th minute to propel UC Davis past Sacramento State, 1-0, Thursday evening in men's soccer action at Aggie Soccer Stadium. In its home opener, the Aggies posted their second consecutive shutout and improved to 2-1 on the year. With the loss, Sacramento State drops to 0-3. The game was the first this year in the annual Causeway Cup.
UC Davis put consistent pressure on the Sacramento defense and held an 11-3 advantage in shots. The eventual game-winner came on a high pass down the middle by Jordan Vanderpoorten. Hornet keeper Ryan Kenny stepped out to grab the ball, but it bounced over his head, allowing Amarikwa to easy score just in front of an empty net. Amarikwa would end up with five of the team's 11 shots.
"I thought our team played very well today," said UC Davis head coach Dwayne Shaffer. "We created a lot of scoring opportunities and put pressure on the back four. With the goal, it was a case where Quincy was where he needed to be."
Charles Warne played the entire game in goal. He stopped two shots in picking up the shutout.
The teams combined for 44 fouls with the Hornets getting called for 27.
The win came five days after UC Davis shutout Gonzaga, 4-0, on the road. The Aggies have not allowed a goal since their season opener at No. 25 Washington.
UC Davis is next in action Saturday when it takes Valparaiso at home. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Stadium.
