DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis posted a 5-2 victory over Nevada, Friday afternoon, at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. With the teams playing singles first, the Aggies clinched the victory in the opening session with four victories. UC Davis also won the doubles point on its way to the three-point win. The victory improves UC Davis to 6-10 on the year while the Wolf Pack drops to 5-11.
Despite wins by Nevada at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, UC Davis was able to claim victories at No. 3 through No. 6. Justin Garcia was among those with wins for the Aggies as he defeated Eldar Dzhafarov, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. Casey McMakin was also victorious with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 over Rafal Stupka. At No. 5, it was Henri Landes defating Max Volger, 6-4, 6-2. Daniel Elefant won by default at No. 6 as the Wolf Pack had only five players available for the match.
Only one doubles match finished as Jordan Combs and Jayce Fitch posted an 8-2 win over Dzhafarov and Guillaume Tonelli, at No. 1. That allowed UC Davis to clinch the double point as the team of Elefant and Jeffrey List won by default at No. 3. The No. 2 match featuring Casey McMakin and Kyle McMakin did not finish due to rain. The duo was leading Milos Popovic and Volger, 5-2, at the time play was suspended.
"I thought everyone battled well in each of the singles matches," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "We were especially focused at No. 3 through No. 5. Hopefully we can carry that over into these next two matches."
The match was the first of three straight at home for UC Davis this weekend. The Aggies are scheduled to take on San Francisco Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. before concluding the homestand Sunday against Loyola Marymount.
