FULLERTON, Calif. - Roxanne Hannan and Nikki Sheldon each hit two-out, two-run homers in the sixth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit as UC Davis defeated Cal State Fullerton, 4-1, in softball action Sunday afternoon at CSF's Anderson Field. The game was the last of a three-game series between the two teams as well as the last of a six-game stretch for the Aggies on the road. Lindsay Tognetti picked up a complete-game victory UC Davis.
UC Davis (14-32) had collected just one hit entering the sixth inning before posting the four runs. Belinda Paine led off the inning with a double, but it appeared CSF's Candice Baker would get out of the inning after she forced a pair of pop-ups. However, with two outs and Paine still at second, Hannan swung at the first pitch she saw and blasted her team-leading fifth homer of the season to left field, driving in Paine ahead of her, and giving UC Davis a 2-1 lead.
The Aggies were not done, though. Ashley Johnson followed with a single up the middle, setting the stage this time for Sheldon. The junior hit a 2-1 pitch over the left center field fence to give UC Davis a 4-1 lead. It was her third home run of the season.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cal State Fullerton (31-21) tried to rally with two outs and no one on. After a pair of singles that put runners at the corners, Tognetti struck out Courtney Martinez to end the threat. In the first inning, Tognetti struck out Marissa Marzan to escape a bases-loaded jam. The Titans scored their lone run in the fifth on a lead-off homer by Martinez.
Tognetti wiggled out of one last jam in the seventh. The Titans put the first two runners on base, and both advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Kiki Munoz then flied out to right, and Katie Gollhardt was gunned down at the plate by Hannan for a double-play. Marzan popped up to end the game.
The Aggies outhit the Titans, 6-5. Three of those hits came from Paine, who finished 3-for-3. Tognetti improved to 7-13 and pitched her eighth complete-game of the season. She allowed five hits and struck out six with eight walks.
UC Davis is next in action when it hosts Nevada Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader at La Rue Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
