UC Davis Downed At Cal Poly, 2-0

April 23, 2006

Final Stats

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly scored two runs in the third inning on its way to a 2-0 victory over UC Davis Sunday afternoon in softball action in San Luis Obispo. The game was the last of a three-game set between the two teams and completed a sweep for the Mustangs. Cal Poly outhit UC Davis, 5-2. The Aggies' Ashley Johnson accounted for both UC Davis hits on the day.

Cal Poly (22-19) took advantage of a dominating performance in the circle by Jenna Maiden, who allowed only three base runners all day and no one past first base. Johnson singled once in the second and again with two outs in the seventh. The only other batter to reach was Nikki Sheldon, who walked in the fifth.

The Mustang attack broke through in the third as Sarah Iwata doubled with one out to drive in the game's first run. Melissa Pura then made it 2-0 with a run-scoring single.

The Aggies received yet another strong effort from Lindsay Tognetti. Besides allowing three hits in the fateful second inning, she gave up just two other hits. Both runs allowed were earned, and she struck out three in a complete-game, six-inning effort.

UC Davis (13-30) is next in action April 29 when it faces Cal State Fullerton on the road in a doubleheader.
