SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Cal Poly, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in men's tennis action in San Luis Obispo. Despite the score, the match was tremendously competitive as four of the six singles matches went three sets. Cal Poly (8-8) claimed the doubles point before eventually winning five matches in singles. The loss drops UC Davis to 5-9 on the year.
In doubles, Cal Poly posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The lone Aggie win came at No. 3 where Casey McMakin and Kyle McMakin defeated Kyle Roybal and Darryn Young, 8-4.
It was a challenge early on in singles as Cal Poly won the first set in all six matches. The Mustangs were able to capitalize from a pair of straight-sets victories at No. 3 and No. 5 to take a 3-0 lead. Closing out the match, though, would not be an easy task for the home team.
In teach of the remaining four matches, the Aggies were busy winning the second set. The rally ended as Henri Landes was the only Aggie able to win a decisive third set. His 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 win over Young at No. 6 proved to be the only point of the match for UC Davis. The win for Landes was the fifth out of his last six and improves him to 12-8 overall.
"Although Cal Poly was the better team today, I liked the way our team battled in singles. Four of the matches went three sets, and we were able to come back to win the second set in each of those matches," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "Hopefully we can build on that momentum heading into Sunday's match at UC Santa Barbara."
UC Davis is schedule to take on the Gauchos Sunday at noon in Santa Barbara.
