SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In a tightly contested match in both singles and doubles, UC Davis posted a 4-3 victory over host Sacramento State in men's tennis action Saturday. It marks the second time in three weeks the Aggies have defeated the Hornets by a 4-3 margin. Henri Landes provided the clinching match at no. 6 singles, and the win improves the Aggies to 3-7 on the year while the Hornets drop to 4-4.
In doubles, Sacramento State won the first match before the Aggies came back to win the next two. Jordan Combs and Jayce Fitch teamed at no. 2 to defeat Warwick Foy and Ramon Perez, 8-4. Michael Chin and Justin Garcia followed at no. 1 with an 8-4 win over Junaid Hossain and Gabriel Loredo. That clinched the doubles point and gave UC Davis a 1-0 lead heading to singles.
Garcia was the first to finish, at no. 4, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Hague Van Dillen that put the Aggies up 2-0. Loredo followed with a straight-sets victory over Fitch at no. 1 to make it 2-1 Aggies.
UC Davis took a 3-1 the lead when, at no. 5, Casey McMakin posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Perez. The roller coaster match continued as the Hornets won the next two matches that finished to tie it at 3-3.
The final match to finish featured Landes at no. 6. He had already won the first set against Thomas Morton, 6-4, and took the second set, 6-2, to give the Aggies a 4-3 victory.
"It was a solid team effort today," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "I was especially impressed with our no. 1 doubles and no. 6 singles. I credit Henri Landes for his desire and willingness to learn."
UC Davis is next in action Sunday when it returns home to the Marya Welch Tennis Center to host Nevada in a match scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
