HONOLULU, Hawaii - The UC Davis men's tennis team began its road trip in Hawaii with a 6-3 victory over Hawaii-Hilo. The win extends the Aggies' season-long winning streak to four matches. UC Davis (5-7) swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles and posted three more victories for the overall win. Jayce Fitch, Justin Garcia and Casey McMakin each picked up wins in singles and doubles.
Fitch and Jordan Combs got things started for the Aggies with an 8-3 victory over Daniel Pollock and Fuyuki Samejima at No. 2 doubles to give UC Davis a 1-0 lead. Casey McMakin and Kyle McMakin followed at No. 3 with an 8-5 win over Mitchel Gelina dn Tomas Mikulasek to put the Aggies on top 2-0. Michael Chin and Garcia completed the doubles sweep with a victory at No. 1.
In singles, Garcia was the first to finish as he cruised past Lars Melskens, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4. That gave the Aggies a commanding 4-0 lead. UC Davis clinched the overall win when Fitch completed a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Christian Schonau at No. 1. At that point, the Aggies had a 5-0 lead. Casey McMakin completed the Aggie scoring with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Samejima.
"Is was a good win for us today," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "Our team is making progress and taking small steps toward maturing."
Several Aggie streaks continued as a result of the victory. In singles, Garcia won his fifth straight match. In doubles, Chin and Garcia extended their winning streak to eight matches. In addition, the win by the McMakins gives them a four-match winning streak.
The loss drops Hawaii-Hilo to 5-10.
UC Davis is next in action Monday afternoon when it faces Hawaii to conclude the road trip.
