DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis dominated Gonzaga, 6-1, in men's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. Michael Chin stayed red-hot for the Aggies, winning his fifth straight doubles match and his third singles match out of the past four. The Aggies swept the Bulldogs in doubles before taking five of six in singles. The win improves UC Davis to 2-7 on the year.
Chin and Justin Garcia easily handled GU's Marco Pineda and Brett Womack at no. 1 doubles, winning 8-3. The victory improved the duo to 8-4 on the year and 6-2 in dual match play. Meanwhile, Casey McMakin and Kyle McMakin defeated Cooper Fratt and Robert Penney, 8-2, at no. 3. The other doubles victory for the Aggies came at no. 2 where Jordan Combs and Jayce Fitch teamed up to knock off Charles Adams and Reid Arthur, 8-6.
In singles, it didn't take long for UC Davis to clinch the overall victory. Fitch was the first to finish as he defeated Arthur, 6-1, 6-2, at no. 1 to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead. Garcia, at no. 5, won his match 20 minutes later when he defeated Penney, 7-6, 6-2. That gave UC Davis a 3-0 lead.
Barely five minutes later, Chin provided the clinching victory when he posted a 6-2, 6-4 win at no. 2 over Womack. With the Aggies leading 4-0 at that point, Henri Landes and Combs provided the finishing touches to the win with singles victories at no. 6 and no. 3, respectively.
"I thought we did a great job in doubles again. We've been strong there most of the year," said UC Davis assistant coach Andrew Csordas. "It was a complete effort by everyone all the way through singles."
UC Davis is next in action Mar. 4 when it takes on Sacramento State in Sacramento.
