MORAGA, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Saint Mary's, 5-2, Sunday afternoon in men's tennis action on Moraga. The Aggies took the doubles point only to see the Gaels win five out of six singles matches to clinch the victory. Justin Garcia claimed victories in doubles and singles play for UC Davis (1-7).

Things looked prosperous for the Aggies early on as UC Davis won two of the three matches to take a 1-0 lead. Garcia teamed with Michael Chin at no. 1 to defeat Adam Fauvre and Tyler Jackson, 8-5. Casey McMakin and Kyle McMakin had the same result when they claimed an 8-5 win over Achim Christner and Yury Platonov at no. 3.

Singles proved to be a different story, altogether, for the Aggies. Saint Mary's (2-4) posted wins at all positions but no. 6. Four of the Gaels' wins were in straight sets. The lone victory for UC Davis came from Garcia, who came back from one set down to defeat Alp Ozpinar, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5.

"I thought our team had a great deal of intensity in doubles," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "However, Saint Mary's was much better overall in singles. I give credit to Justin Garcia for his persistence and determination."

UC Davis is next in action Feb. 24 when it hosts Gonzaga at 1:30 p.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
