DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team was defeated by UC Irvine, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Anteaters won two out of three in doubles and four in singles to secure the victory. Michael Chin posted wins in singles and doubles for the Aggies while Jayce Fitch and Justin Garcia also claimed victories.
In doubles, Chin and Garcia started things off with an 8-3 win over Aaron Ellis and Andrei Radulescu at no. 2. Victor Lamm and Alex Sundling followed with an 8-5 win at no. 3 over Casey McMakin and Kyle McMakin. The clinching match in doubles came down to no. 1 where Trevor Dobson and Mustafa Ulukan edged Jordan Combs and Fitch, 8-6. That gave UCI a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Chin was the first to win in singles, defeating Radulescu, 6-1, 6-1, at no. 3 to tie the match at 1-1. Victor Lamm followed with a straight-sets win over Combs at no. 2 to make it 2-1 UCI. The Aggies tied the match at 2-2 when Fitch defeated Ulukan, 6-2, 6-4 at no. 1.
That was as close as UC Davis would get as UC Irvine won the remaining three matches. Ellis defeated C. McMakin, 6-3, 6-4, at no. 4 to put the Anteaters on top 3-2. The final two matches, at no. 6 and no. 5, also went to UCI. Dobson's 7-6, 4-6, 6-1 win over Daniel Elefant at no. 6 clinched the win for UC Irvine.
"I'm really proud of our team's fight and determination," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "It was a hard-fought match that lasted nearly five hours. All in all, I think it shows we are on the right track, and we expect to build on that."
UC Davis returns to action Feb. 18 when it hosts UC Riverside at 1 p.m.
