DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season with a 4-3 decision over Sacramento State Saturday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies, playing in their home opener, took the doubles point and held on to claim three victories in singles to pick up the win. Casey McMakin posted a pair of wins, including the clinching match in singles.
In doubles, Sacramento State (1-2) picked up the first win at no. 1 before UC Davis (1-4) came back to claim a win at no. 3 when C. McMakin and Kyle McMakin defeated Thomas Morton and Ramon Perez, 8-4. Michael Chin and Justin Garcia followed with an 8-5 win at no. 2 over Warwick Foy and Hague Van Dillen to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Sacramento State won the first match, at no. 1, to tie it at 1-1. Henri Landes followed at no. 6 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Morton to make it 2-1. After the Hornets tied it at 2-2 with a win at no. 3, the Aggies followed with a victory from Jayce Fitch, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, over Gabriel Loredo at no. 2 to make it 3-2.
The Hornets tied it at 3-3 with a three-set victory from Perez at no. 4. C. McMakin then won the final match of the day with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Van Dillen at no. 5.
"It was a really intense match and fun to watch," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "It was nice to get this win, especially since we've had so many of these one-point matches go the other way over the past two seasons. It will certainly help our confidence"
UC Davis returns to action Sunday morning when it hosts UC Irvine at 1:00 p.m.
