SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A mix of old and new made for a productive day for the UC Davis men's tennis team at day two of the SCU Bronco Classic in Santa Clara. Michael Reiser won two more matches to advance to the semifinals of Flight C Singles. Justin Garcia bounced back to post two wins in singles and one in doubles. In all, the Aggie contingent won eight of its combined 11 singles and doubles matches. Four of the wins came from newcomers to the team while the other four came from returning players.
One of the most competitive matches of the entire tournament featured Reiser in his first match of the day against Fresno State's Taylor Leiby. After giving up the first set in a tiebreaker, the sophomore fought back to take the second set, 7-5. The third set would feature yet another tiebreaker, this time won by Reiser. The transfer from Boston College would go on to defeat UC Santa Cruz's Max Ortiz, 7-6, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
In other action in the main draw, Roberto Bianco of Fresno Pacific defeated Henri Landes, 6-4, 7-5 in the Flight B Singles round of 16. In Flight A Doubles, Michael Chin and Garcia won their round of 16 match with Cal's Eoin Heavey and Kalim Stewart, 8-4. In the quarterfinals, Boise State's Piotr Dilaj and Eric Roberson posted a 9-8 victory. In Flight B Doubles, Landes and Reiser fell short in their bid to advance to the quarterfinals, dropping an 8-2 decision to UC San Diego's Stephen Oechel and Seth Spector.
In consolation action, the Aggies were a perfect 5-0 on the day. Garcia and Chin both posted victories in the Flight B Singles round of 16. Garcia advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over San Francisco's Mitch Del Rosario.
In Flight C Singles, Hunter Lee and Kevin Liang advanced to the quarterfinals. Lee defeated Nevada's Augustin Myard, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0, in the round of 32 and advanced to the quarterfinals via a bye. Liang was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Sonoma State's Brandon Buskirk in the round of 16.
The three-day competition concludes Sunday. Reiser is scheduled to face Santa Clara's Blaine Shields in his semifinal match.
