SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team began its season Friday at the Santa Clara Bronco Classic. Seven Aggies are on hand at the tournament taking part in singles and doubles action. In his debut with the Aggies, sophomore Michael Reiser posted a pair of wins in singles as well as a win in doubles. Henri Landes, Michael Chin and Justin Garcia also had victories.
In Flight B Singles action, Landes advanced to the round of 16 after winning his match-up with Washington's Andy Gerst by default. Garcia was knocked off in the round of 64 by BYU's Michael Eraso, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Chin also suffered a defeat in the first round, falling to Oregon's Francisco Gallardo, 6-2, 7-5.
In Flight C Singles, Reiser defeated Santa Clara's Joe Galbraith, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 64. Later in the day, he advanced to the round of 16 with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Stanford's Dave Ryan. Also in Flight C, UC Davis' Hunter Lee was defeated by UC San Diego's Ramesh Thondapu, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the round of 32. In the same round, BYU's Albert Nersesyan posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over the Aggies' Kevin Liang.
In Flight A Doubles, the duo of Chin and Garcia defeated Santa Clara's Brian Brogan and Jay Wong, 8-6, in the round of 32. In the same round in Flight B, Landes and Reiser defeated Jeffrey Fong and Colin Mark-Griffin of UC Santa Cruz, 8-4. Fresno Pacific's Victor Medina and Anthony Harris were 8-5 winners over Liang and McGee.
Competition continues all day Saturday before concluding on Sunday.
