BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman Herzyl Legaspi was UC Davis' lone winner on the second day at the ITA Northwest Regional at California Saturday, picking up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cal Poly's Devin Peek in the second round of the consolation singles draw.
Legaspi later lost a tough battle with Fiorella Nevada in the third round, first taking the first set by a 6-3 score, then losing by a 6-4 decision in the second and finally losing, 10-8, in the tiebreaker.
Sophomore Jenna Kappel also advanced by virtue of an injury withdrawal by scheduled opponent Jasmina Bogucanin of Pacific.
The UC Davis tandem of Emma Athavale and Emma Shapiro was one of three Aggie doubles teams in action Saturday. They had the day's closest match, falling 8-6 to the Oregon duo of Erika Januskova and Monica Hozdevila.
In belated Friday results, Robin Guier defeated Sanda Hadzisabic in a 6-0, 6-1 straight-set victory, then lost in a 6-0, 6-0 second-round match to Alice Hall of Nevada. Guier joined Kappel in the doubles bracket, falling to the Washington State tandem of Aleksandra Cekic and Amy Toth.
UC Davis has no players remaining in the regional, which continues through Monday.
