BERKELEY, Calif. - Freshman Desiree Stone picked up wins in each of the singles and doubles draws of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional, highlighting Aggie action on Day 1 of the annual tournament Friday.
Stone beat Gonzaga's Erin Humphrey in straight sets, winning by a 6-1, 6-4 final in the first round; then lost to 16th-seeded Renata Kucerkova of Fresno State in the second round. She also teamed up with fellow freshman Herzyl Legaspi for an 8-5 win over Pacific's Svenja Arens/Vana Mrazovic tandem in the doubles bracket.
Legaspi won her first set Stephanie Ordoveza of Saint Mary's by a 7-5 margin, then lost 6-4, 6-2 the rest of the way. Another Aggie freshman, Anita Athavale, also played a split-set loss, falling to Pacific's Sasha Fisher by a 2-6, 6-2, 2-6 margin in the opening round.
Stone was the only Aggie to post a win in either the singles or doubles bracket, although results were not available for the first-round matches of junior Robin Guier, senior Yuka Otaka or sophomore Jenna Kappel.
The Stone/Legaspi team later lost to Stanford's eighth-seed pairing of Celia Durkin and Jessica Nguyen in the second round of the doubles bracket.
The ITA Northwest Regional continues through Monday.
