UC Davis Defeats Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, In Overtime

Oct. 14, 2006

Final Stats

FULLERTON, Calif. - Paul Cain scored his third goal of the year with less than three minutes remaining in the first overtime to power UC Davis past Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, in men's soccer action in Fullerton. Dylan Curtis also scored for the Aggies in a match that was scoreless for more than 82 minutes. Both teams scored goals 16 seconds apart late in regulation. The win improves UC Davis to 7-5-2 on the year, while Cal State Fullerton falls to 5-8-1. It also gives the Aggies a season sweep over the Titans.

Neither team was able to put the ball in the net deep into the second half, and it appeared the match would likely head to overtime with no score. That changed dramatically in the 83rd minute as Curtis put the Aggies in front with his first goal of the year. Nicholas Lind assisted on the play, which took place with 7:25 left on the clock.

The lead would last only 16 seconds as the Titans responded immediately on an unassisted goal by Amir Shafii. Just like that, the match was tied 1-1.

The score remained that way until Cain connected in the 98th minute. His goal came on a header from a sharp cross from Mariano Arrua. It was Arrua's team-leading sixth assist of the season.

UC Davis outshot Cal State Fullerton, 10-8. Curtis and Dan Campbell each had three shots. Charles Warne posted two saves in goal for the Aggies.

The win improves UC Davis' already impressive record against Big West Conference teams to 5-1-2. The Aggies will become official members of the Big West in 2007.

UC Davis is next in action Wednesday evening when it faces UC Santa Barbara on the road.
