FRESNO, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team began play Friday at the Fresno State Bulldog Classic. Daniel Elefant and Nick Amaroli each posted wins in opening round action while Hunter Lee, Kevin Liang and Thomas McGee were winners in the consolation bracket. A total of eight Aggies are taking part in the three-day event, which is the second of the fall for UC Davis.
In Flight A singles action, San Diego's Tom Liversage defeated the Aggies' Henri Landes, 6-4, 6-1, in the round of 32. Fresno Pacific's Petr Sitnikov was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Michael Reiser, ending the sophomore's 6-0 start to the season.
In Flight B, Elefant posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Sacramento State's Ramon Perez in the round of 32. He was defeated in the next round by Fresno State's Tejesvi Veerepalli, 6-2, 6-0. Hunter Lee, Tyler Lee and Kevin Liang all dropped matches in straight sets in the opening round.
Aggie newcomer Nick Amaroli defeated San Diego's Laurence Kourie, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, in the Flight C round of 16 and advances to Saturday's quarterfinals. Thomas McGee was defeated by Fresno State's Greg Jackson, 6-4, 6-0 in the opening round.
In doubles action, Hunter Lee and Tyler Lee were defeated by San Diego's Tom Liversage and Charl Wolmarans, 8-1. in the Flight A round of 16. The duos of Amaroli and Elefant along with Liang and McGee fell in the Flight B round of 16.
In consolation action, Hunter Lee, Liang and McGee all were winners.
Play continues Saturday morning and concludes on Sunday.
