STOCKTON, Calif. - For the second time in its last three matches, the UC Davis men's tennis team was defeated by the slimmest of margins. The Aggies dropped a 4-3 decision to host Pacific Sunday afternoon in Stockton. UC Davis claimed the doubles point before Pacific came back to win four of the six singles matches. Jayce Fitch and Casey McMakin each posted victories in singles and doubles.
In doubles, UC Davis (0-4) claimed the first victory at no. 3 when C. McMakin and Kyle McMakin defeated Alan Kelly and Robert Price, 8-4. Pacific (2-0) evened the doubles tally at 1-1 when Jorgen Vestli and Vladimir Zdravkovic claimed an 8-3 win over UCD's Michael Chin and Justin Garcia. At no. 2, it was Jordan Combs and Fitch who gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead when they defeated Tim Koniarski and Arnar Sigurdsson, 8-6.
In singles, the Tigers rallied to win the first four matches that finished. Vestli was the first to win with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at no. 1 over Combs that tied the match at 1-1. At no. 2, Sigurdsson won in straight sets over Chin to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. The advantage increased to 3-1 when Koniarski won at no. 5. Pacific clinched the win when Kelly knocked off Garcia in three sets at no. 4.
C. McMakin defeated Austin Kakar, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, at no. 6 to give the Aggies their second point of the day. The win improved McMakin to 2-0 in dual match play and 5-3 overall this season. At no. 3, Fitch outlasted Zdravkovic, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
"Jordan Combs and Jayce Fitch did a great job in their doubles match," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "Jayce had a great day. It was his best performance in singles since he's been at Davis."
The match ended a stretch of four straight matches on the road to start the season. UC Davis next hosts Sacramento State Feb. 11 in its home opener.
