Aggies Open 2006 Season

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team began its 2006 season Monday with pair of losses in Santa Clara. The Aggies began the day with a 5-0 loss against host Santa Clara before falling in a 4-3 marathon to UC Santa Cruz. Against Santa Clara, the Aggies (0-2) were dominated, winning just one doubles match. The UC Santa Cruz match came down to singles play with all but one match going three sets.

The afternoon began when Santa Clara (2-0) took the doubles point to lead 1-0. At no. 1, Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen defeated the UC Davis team of Michael Chin and Justin Garcia, 8-6. The Aggies' lone win of the day came at no. 2 when Jordan Combs and Jayce Fitch defeated Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields, 8-4. The Broncos also picked up a win at no. 3.

In singles, Santa Clara won four times in straight sets. At no. 1, Macek defeated Chin, 6-1, 6-0. Rasmussen, Tommy Hicks and Brian Brogan also claimed victories for the Broncos. Matches involving Fitch at no. 2 and Daniel Elefant at no. 4 did not finish.

The Aggies got off to a fast start against UC Santa Cruz (1-1), winning all three doubles matches. Combs and Fitch started things off with an 8-2 win at no. 2 over Ilya Gendleman and Max Ortiz. Chin and Garcia followed with an 8-6 win over Matt Seeberger and Shane Tenpleton at no. 1 to clinch the point and give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. Casey McMakin and Kyle McMakin also picked up a win in doubles.

In singles, the Slugs tied the match when Seeberger claimed a straight sets win at no. 1 over Chin. Templeton and Jared Kamel followed at no. 2 and no. 3, respectively, with victories as UC Santa Cruz took a 3-1 lead. Shortly thereafter, Henri Landes outlasted Donald Divanian, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, at no. 5 to make it 3-2. Kyle McMakin followed with another three-set win at no. 6 to tie the match at 3-3. Colin Mark-Griffin clinched the win for the Slugs at no. 4 with a 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 win over Garcia.

"I was a great college match," said UC Davis head coach Daryl Lee. "I give Santa Cruz credit. Their players earned it."

UC Davis is next in action Jan. 22 when it plays at Fresno State at 11 a.m.
