DAVIS, Calif. - Junior midfielder Mariano Arrua's goal with 48 seconds remaining in the second half lifted UC Davis to a 1-0 victory over Notre Dame de Namur in a collegiate men's soccer game at Aggie Field Wednesday afternoon.
The Aggies remain undefeated at 2-0-1 with the win. The Argonauts move to 1-2-1 for the season.
With less than a minute remaining in the game, freshman Quincy Amarikwa advanced up the left sideline, then sent a cross to Dylan Curtis, who rerouted it to Arrua high in the box. Arrua sidestepped one Argo defender, then sent a low missile into the net for the game-winning goal.
Both Amarikwa and Curtis earned assists on the scoring play.
UC Davis outshot NDNU by a 13-5 and spent the majority of the game in control of the ball. However, the Aggies could not reach the scoreboard despite numerous opportunities. Their first substantial chance came in the 20th minute when Juan Hernandez served a free kick to sophomore Nicholas Lind near the right post. Lind headed a shot attempt but Argo goalkeeper Nicholas Arellano was there for his second of five total saves.
Notre Dame did not manage a shot until the final seconds of the first half, although junior forward did have one negated by an offsides violation. In the 23rd minute, Hooper broke through the Aggie back line and fired a low shot on goal. UC Davis keeper Charles Warne stopped the shot but the play was already whistled dead.
The Aggies had additional second-half opportunities, including a threat in the 63rd minute when Arellano was forced more than 20 yards from the goal box. UC Davis gained possession near the centerline and, as Arellano scrambled to return to his post, sophomore Bertin Loyola fired a shot at an unmanned net from some 40 yards deep. However, that shot missed wide right.
NDNU's closest scoring chance came in the 73rd minute as sophomore Juan Pinal fired a shot at the high left corner of the Aggie net. Warne made a leaping save, deflecting the ball off his fingertips. The Argos could not convert on the ensuing corner kick. Warne finished the game with three saves and his fourth career shutout.
Amarikwa put additional pressure on the Argo defense in the final stretch. In the 83rd minute, he beat two defenders into the penalty box, only to be tackled by a third. Minutes later, Lind sent a perfectly placed cross to Amarikwa in the open field, but the freshman forward's shot missed just high.
UC Davis junior defender Steven Ernst provided yet another opportunity at the 86:20 mark when he sent a cross from the left flank to freshman Dan Campbell in the penalty box. However, Campbell's header was stopped by Arellano.
The Aggies finish their four-game homestand with a matchup with Dayton on Sunday.
