Paschetta, Read Lead Aggies To First Victory

Sept. 3, 2005

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Chantal Paschetta and senior Nicole Read each had 14 kills to lead UC Davis to a 30-19, 30-24, 30-19 sweep in the fourth match of the Aggie Invitational women's volleyball tournament Saturday.

The Aggies, who improve to 1-3, will conclude the tournament with a 7 p.m. match against Washington State at 7 p.m. Saturday evening.

Paschetta also had four of UC Davis' nine aces, including three in the final five points of the Game 1 victory. Nichole Brown recorded 20 digs to lead five Aggies in double figures.

For Idaho State, senior outside hitter Felice Yocopis had 14 kills and 16 digs while Nikki Havens posted 11 kills and 18 digs.

Both teams started to a 15-15 tie in the first game before Katie Wilson posted a solo block and block assist to help UC Davis pull away to a 25-19 lead. Paschetta had back-to-back aces to push that margin to 27-19, then Wilson and senior opposite Jill McPheeters combined for a block to move the Aggies up to a 28-19 edge. Paschetta and Read each had five kills in the first game.

In Game 2, Paschetta and McPheeters each recorded two kills in a stretch that saw UC Davis turn a 7-4 deficit to a 14-10 lead. But Yocopis had a kill and a block and ISU capitalized on five Aggie hitting errors to race back to a 19-19 deadlock. Read and Pierce posted kills to break a 22-22 tie into a 25-22 lead, then Wilson's ace stretched the advantage to four points.

Nikki Havens had eight digs in that game while Brown and freshman Michelle Nelson posted seven on the Aggie side. Paschetta tallied six kills in the second frame.

UC Davis jumped out to a 17-7 start thanks to serving runs by Paschetta and Nelson, but the Bengals trimmed that to a 20-14 behind the offense of Yocopis. However, the Aggies protected their lead as Read had two kills and a block down the stretch.

In Saturday's opener, Washington State tallied 20 team blocks to take a 30-28, 34-32, 30-25 win over Toledo. Natalia Owens led the Cougars with nine, while Jen Barcus added seven. Gwen Davis chipped in a total of six stuffs, including three solos.

Barcus also paced WSU offensively, hitting eight kills. WSU recovered from early deficits in each of the first two games in its sweep. The Rockets led 16-7 early in Game before the Cougars battled back to a 26-24 deficit. In Game 2, Toledo led 12-3 until WSU managed to whittle that edge to just 16-15.

Kate Bean led Toledo with 14 kills but she also committed 16 errors in the process, largely against the Cougar block. Lori Sarich posted a match-best 20 digs for the Rockets.

The tournament concludes Saturday evening, starting with a 4:30 match between Idaho State and Toledo.
