Franco's Blast Carries Anteaters Over Aggies

Sept. 23, 2005

Box Score

IRVINE, Calif. - Junior Doug Franco launched a 25-yard shot into the back of the net to account for the only goal in UC Irvine's 1-0 victory over UC Davis in a non-conference men's collegiate soccer match at Anteater Stadium Friday evening.

The Aggies drop to 3-2-2 on the season. The Anteaters improve to 2-3-2.

Franco's goal came as an indirect result of a UC Irvine corner kick in the 55th minute of the game. UC Davis successfully cleared the ball out of its own penalty area, but it fell into the possession of Franco, who sent it back into the upper right corner of the Aggie cage.

UC Davis freshman Quincy Amarikwa had two of his team's four total shots, but Irvine goalkeeper Ryan Mathy posted three saves in earning his third shutout of the season. Aggie freshman keeper Derek Shaffer also had three saves and allowed the first goal of his young career.

UC Davis remains in Southern California to complete its all-UC weekend. The Aggies take on UC Riverside at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
