Sept. 2, 2005

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Junior outside hitter Kate Bean had 15 kills to lead Toledo to a 30-27, 30-26, 30-28 win over UC Davis in the second match of the Aggie Invitational women's collegiate volleyball tournament at the Pavilion Friday.

The Rockets improve to 2-1 for the year. The Aggies remain winless at 0-3.

Juniors Jenny Pierce and Nicole Read each had seven kills to lead UC Davis offensively. Freshman libero Nichole Brown posted 15 digs while junior Katie Wilson had five total blocks at the net.

Toledo overcame an early 12-10 deficit when Emi Holsclaw served up eight straight points. A block by Sarah Kreher and Brittany Alaburda put the Rockets ahead by 18-12, their largest lead of the first game. Lora Sarich picked up seven of her 14 total digs in that frame.

Kelsey Culver had three straight aces to help the Rockets pull away to a 15-9 lead midway in Game 2, then Toledo capitalized on three UC Davis hitting errors to make it 19-11. Alaburda knocked down a free ball to push the lead to 22-13 before the Aggies made a strong comeback. Pierce hammered down a kill then freshman teammate Michelle Nelson served UC Davis to a closer 23-21 deficit.

A Culver kill and block helped Toledo pull away to a 29-22 lead, then Aggie freshman Chantal Paschetta had two late kills to bring the score to 29-26. Bean finally finished the game with a kill to give Toledo a 2-0 games lead.

Bean had six kills against no errors in her first eight attempts in the third game, helping Toledo establish a late 26-18 edge. Again, UC Davis enjoyed a strong comeback as setter Katelyn Astruc served back-to-back aces, cutting the margin to 28-25. A Rocket hitting error allowed UC Davis to pull to a 29-28 deficit. Then in the match-point situation, Kreher sent a ball into the Aggie midcourt. Astruc made a fine effort to gain a piece of the attack but UC Davis could not gain control of the ball and Toledo sealed its sweep.

Culver finished the night with nine kills. Alaburda had five blocks for the Rockets.

In Friday's earlier match, junior outside hitter Nikki Havens posted 20 kills and hit .436 to lead Idaho State to a 3-0 sweep of Washington State. She had seven kills in each of the first game, sparking an 8-1 run in Game 1 and an 8-0 stretch in Game 2 to help the Bengals pull away from the Cougars.

Havens also had a match-high 16 digs and posted four total blocks. Felice Yocopis added 15 kills and 14 digs in support of Idaho State. Junior middle blocker Jen Barcus led WSU with 14 kills and a .333 hitting average.
