Pierce Earns All-Tournament Honors At UVSU

Sept. 17, 2005

Junior middle blocker Jenny Pierce had 19 kills in her team's two Saturday matches to represent UC Davis on the all-tournament team of the La Quinta Utah Valley State Invitational women's volleyball tournament. Pierce had 12 kills with four blocks in the Aggies' 27-30, 24-30, 30-26, 20-30 loss to the host Wolverines in the nightcap, and had seven kills with a .278 hitting average in UC Davis' 16-30, 18-30, 22-30 setback to Idaho State in the day's early match.

The Aggies went 0-3 in the tournament, falling to 2-11 for the season.

Freshman outside hitter Chantal Paschetta led UC Davis with 18 kills and a .375 hitting average in the evening contest with UVSC. She and junior outside hitter Nicole Read each posted double-doubles in the match. Paschetta had 12 digs to go with her offensive output, while Read tallied 14 kills and 13 digs. Freshman libero Nichole Brown led all Aggies with 17 digs on the night. Senior Jill McPheeters added 10 kills, a .409 hitting average and three block assists.

Paschetta had four kills in UC Davis' Game 3 win, helping her team recover from an early 13-8 deficit. The Aggies caught up at 19-19 on a block by Pierce and McPheeters, then took their first lead on a Paschetta kill followed by a Read ace. UVSC prevented UC Davis from forcing a fifth game, leading for the entirety of Game 4. Senior libero Maegan Hoyt served up back-to-back aces down the stretch to stretch the Wolverine advantage to a nearly unbeatable 28-18 edge.

In the Aggies' early action, Nikki Havens put down 22 kills and Felice Yocopis added 19 to help the Bengals avenge their three-game loss to UC Davis just two weeks prior. Yocopis eventually was named tournament MVP, her third such honor in as many weeks. She won similar distinction at UC Davis' Aggie Invitational on September 2-3.

Also appearing on the all-touranament team were Havens from Idaho State, Lacee Koelliker and Anne Olsen from Utah Valley State, and Carol Marcengo and Kati Broom from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Aggies return to action with a road match against No. 25 UC Irvine on September 23.
